When Hawai`i became the 50th state, my mother sadly said, Hawai`i will never be the same. The changes she envisioned came swiftly, changing the landscape and a way of life that made Hawai`i so special. My mother died when I was 15 but I began to fully realize what she meant. She was so right. By the time I was 21 the Honolulu of my youth had disappeared. Shops, restaurants, buildings, entire blocks were gone.
In his book, The Ability to Love, Allan Fromme expresses how I feel Our cities with their swollen populations and cliff dwelling high rise buildings are breeding places for loneliness. Neighborhoods crumble under the housing development bulldozers and families scatter in pursuit of jobs and professions everywhere. In a world of wheels, old and comfortable groupings of people have disappeared. I feel a need to memorialize some of my favorite places before they disappear. My pictures are for my daughter and future generations - as well as all who cherish what makes Hawai`i so special. I hope my art takes you to your own special place in Hawai`i or a special place in your life.
Aloha and Mālama Pono.
